Nate Napkins
Full name: Nathaniel “Nate” Napkins
“Napkins? Oh, no. Never. Napkins are chaos incarnate. You never truly own a napkin. It owns you.”
Overview
Nate Napkins is a charismatic, perpetually-traveling merchant who sells everything except napkins. Despite his ridiculous branding and theatrical persona, he is one of the most resourceful individuals in continental trade. He has connections to caravans, underground exchange circles, and private collectors across multiple kingdoms.
He is dismissed by nobles as a novelty, adored by commoners for his humor and fair prices, and quietly respected by powerful figures like Madam Chi K. En, who suspects he is far more influential than he appears.
Nate is the party’s first major quest patron and becomes their most reliable recurring supplier. He shows up at the most mundane, critical, or chaotic moments to sell his usual nonsense. Never napkins.
Long-term hook: Nate may secretly be part of an ancient merchant order that traces Mythos. His “Napkin brand” is possibly an elaborate code used in high trade circles. The absurdity is the cover.

Ability Scores
Not statted for combat. His weapons are charm, connections, and the fact that he always has exactly what you need for slightly more than you expected to pay.
Role in the Campaign
- First recurring quest patron: the Caravan Escort (see Quest - Caravan Escort Tollbridge Route) is the party’s first D-rank contract and first job outside city limits
- Wandering Trader archetype: reappears at irregular and often perfectly timed intervals throughout all three acts
- Information broker: his rumor mill runs slightly ahead of official channels
- Item source: offers unique goods no guild vendor stocks
- Tone anchor: starts as comedic relief, reveals depth when threatened or when the economy is genuinely at stake
Sample Dialogue
- “Adventurers! Perfect timing. I am in dire need of protection from mild inconvenience, light rain, and possibly goblins.”
- “Napkins? Oh, no. Never. Napkins are chaos incarnate. You never truly own a napkin. It owns you.”
Story Role
A roaming merchant who appears at perfectly inconvenient or perfectly fortunate moments. His appearances should feel like a surprise reward. When things are boring, he has a contract. When things are at their worst, he has the one item that helps. When things are going well, he shows up to sell something inexplicable and disappear before anyone asks follow-up questions.
Connections
- Adventurer’s Guild (Solen Branch): registered merchant, posts official contracts through the board.
- Madam Chi K. En: business associate. They respect each other. She suspects he is hiding something.
- Mayor Mayor: repeat accidental bulk customer. Three times and counting.
- M3: early ally and recurring support character across all acts.
